Urgent Need for Smart Meter Health and Safety Legislation

[Editor Note:  This blog article consists of a document authored by Richard H. Conrad, Ph.D., posted with permission for this website, intended as a possible letter addressed to state legislators regarding the urgent need for wireless smart meter health and safety legislation.  Dr. Conrad is from Hawaii and used the document for that state.  Others might adapt the document for their own state or province.]

For Legislators on Wireless Smart Meters:  HEALTH and SAFETY ISSUES

by Richard H. Conrad, Ph.D. Biochemist, May 12, 2014

Hawaii State Legislature PhotoPART I:  Safety legislation is urgently needed

To ensure that any new metering systems installed on homes and businesses are safe for continuous human exposure, new legislation must be written to guide the PUC.  Here are the reasons:

“Searching for a Golden Cage” … A Short Film About EHS

A Film by Nadav Neuhaus

A growing number of people suffer from electromagnetic hypersensitivity, commonly called EHS.  This twelve-minute film focuses on the dilemma faced by these people who feel sick in the presence of the electromagnetic waves that emanate from virtually all modern electronics.

[Updated:  This film was originally available for embedding at this website, but at some point the link was deleted.  To view the film, refer to the new link added below.]

Electromagnetic Radiation (EMR) Awareness Month

EHS Awareness MonthFrom MCS America [1]:

Sensitivity to electromagnetic radiation affects 9.8 million men, women, and children of all races in America (Levallois, 2002).  Even though sensitivity to electromagnetic radiation is of widespread epidemic prevalence, public awareness of the disabling health effects of common electromagnetic exposures and ways to manage and accommodate sensitivity to electromagnetic radiation remains limited.  Electromagnetic Radiation Awareness Month, May 2014, bestows upon us a great opportunity to work towards increased public awareness of sensitivity to electromagnetic radiation.

A Call for Organizations to Join EHS Legal Briefs

Amicus CuriaeThere are currently two (2) legal cases in the United States (within the state of New Mexico) which were filed by Arthur Firstenberg on the issue of Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity (EHS).  Mr. Firstenberg has been working for decades to help people with EHS in the U.S. and worldwide.

Although Dafna Tachover (an Israeli attorney) is not a party to the above cases, she intends to join the proceedings through what is known as an “amicus curiaewhich means “friend of the Court.”  It is a type of procedure in which someone who is not a party to the case submits a brief to the Court which includes information that has a bearing on the case, with the intention of assisting the Court to reach the correct decision.

Mayor Makes Appeal to the Conscience of Legislators on Smart Meters

The following guest editorial about smart meters was written by John Ranns, the longtime Mayor of the District of Metchosin located on the southern coast of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada.

Mayor John Ranns of MetchosinMayor Ranns initially wrote the guest editorial in November 2013 hoping to have it published in the Victoria Times-Colonist and subsequently in other major newspapers in British Columbia.  None of the major papers published the piece.

In communications with SkyVision Solutions, Mayor Ranns indicated that he wanted to make an appeal to the conscience of legislators.  Ranns says that, “As a long time elected representative I remain dismayed at the lack of political under-standing regarding the relationship between our governance and fundamental freedom.”

What follows is a guest editorial printed with permission of Mayor Ranns that major media outlets have yet failed to publish, in one instance citing that the article was not “topical.”

Worcester, MA City Council Committee Requests “Smart Grid” Delay

WORCESTER, Massachusetts — A Worcester City Council subcommittee is calling for a one-year postponement in National Grid’s “smart grid” pilot program.

This article and video will demonstrate that the utility company doesn’t care about the canary in the coal mine … or anybody else.

The Canary in the Coal MineThe three member Public Service and Transportation Committee unanimously voted Wednesday night to ask National Grid, the state Department of Public Utilities and the city Zoning Board of Appeals to consider a one-year delay in the installation of any more smart meters and the construction of any communications towers associated with the program.  Committee members argued that a postponement is warranted because there are too many unanswered questions related to public health, security and privacy associated with the smart meter/grid program.

“Smart Meter Backlash … Catching on Everywhere”

According to SmartGridNews.com:

“Smart meter backlash is ‘mass hysteria.’  (And it’s catching on everywhere.)”

Sky FallingWell, most of the above headline is correct, except for the “mass hysteria” part.

As one major U.S. utility has admitted, “There is no rational basis for this technology choice.”  So if smart meters are not rational, and there are at least “Nine Reasons Why Today’s Smart Meter Systems Are a [Big] Mistake,” why would anyone characterize a growing movement against smart meters as “mass hysteria” … which implies a mental disorder?

The Health Argument Against Wireless Smart Meters

[Editor Note:  This blog article highlights a document authored by Ronald M. Powell, Ph.D.  The document makes a strong case against the use of wireless smart meters and  for replacing them with safe metering technology.  Although specific mention is made in this well-written document to the state of Maryland, reference to any state or province could easily be substituted, as applicable, when electric or other utility companies have been allowed to move forward with wireless smart meter deployments.]

The Health Argument for Replacing Wireless Smart Meters with a Safe Metering Technology in Maryland

by Ronald M. Powell, Ph.D. [1], April 16, 2014

“The electric power companies of Maryland made a dreadful mistake when they elected to install Wireless Smart Meters to measure electrical power.  Wherever these meters are installed, they threaten the health of all residents in the community, violate their privacy, increase the cyber vulnerability of the supply of electricity to their homes, decrease their personal security and safety, and threaten property values in the community.  And Wireless Smart Meters do all of this without any persuasive evidence of any financial benefit to the customers.”

Nine Reasons Why Today’s Smart Meter Systems Are a Mistake

[Editor Note:  This blog article consists of a document authored by Richard H. Conrad, Ph.D., intended as a letter addressed to a utility company considering the installation of smart meters.]

NINE REASONS WHY TODAY’S SMART METER SYSTEMS ARE A MISTAKE

by Richard H. Conrad, Ph.D. biochemist

INTRODUCTION

Smart electric meters and smart grid systems track and record details of customers’ energy usage, and transmit the information to utilities wirelessly at microwave frequencies. Authorities are attempting to make smart meters mandatory.  They are usually installed without permission and sometimes against the wishes of homeowners.  Smart meters fill homes with pulsed microwave radiation 24/7 without consent, and infringe on the privacy, security, safety and health of residents.
