Doctor Reports That Wireless Smart Meters Can Cause Illness

Smart Meter Graphic AAccording to Dr. Amy Dean, “The claim has been made that smart meters are safe and that no health risks exist.  However, [the] industry has not conducted independent studies or investigations to verify that claim.”

Dr. Dean is an Ann Arbor, Michigan (USA) physician and the immediate past president for the American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM).

“Recently, the AAEM received a 92-case series* from outside the United States for review regarding smart meter health effects,” Dean said. “Based on this research, it appears that there is a direct correlation between smart meter installation and the development of health conditions such as insomnia, fatigue, headaches, cognitive disturbance and other symptoms.  Many of these are the same symptoms correlated with EMF and RF exposure found in the scientific literature.”

[*Updated Entry 06 Nov 13:  According to a newly released document by the AAEM entitled, “Wireless Smart Meter Case Studies,” a review of the well documented 92-case series “clearly demonstrates adverse health effects in the human population from smart meter emissions.”]

“It was clear to me when reviewing the scientific literature that these fields have a definite impact on the human body and can cause disease,” Dean said.

According to Dr. Dean, “For example, one of my [own] patients developed palpitations and a heart arrhythmia following the installation of three smart meters on her condo.  After two of the three meters were removed, her heart condition improved significantly.  There are many patients like this in Michigan and throughout North America.  There is clearly some type of physiological process occurring.  Electromagnetic (EMF) and radiofrequency (RF) field measurements will often confirm that patients’ symptoms are indeed real.”

“Environmental pollutants, including EMF and RF, generally impact the weakest link in the body.  So, if a person is prone to heart disease, cancer or neurological disease, the EMF/RF exposure will likely result in symptoms related to that vulnerable system.  Clinical observations of environmental physicians are also showing that exposure to certain pollutants in the past or present can make an individual more susceptible to electromagnetic hypersensitivity,” Dean said.

Dr. Dean explains, “Doctors in the current health care environment are so limited on the amount of time they can spend with patients, they don’t have the opportunity to ask the questions that lead to the environmental cause.  If they had any idea how much EMF and RF are affecting their patient’s disease process, I am certain they would be issuing warnings.”

Dr. Dean also explains that, “Having the option to maintain an analog meter on the home or workplace is critical to protect patients’ health.  Although it seems old-fashioned, analog meters allow people to create a safe living space and protect their health until alternative technology can be substituted that is both state-of-the-art and safe.”

Still University.  She completed her Internal Medicine residency at St. John Detroit Riverview Hospital in Detroit, MI and served as chief resident in Internal Medicine.  She is board certified in Environmental Medicine, Internal Medicine and Holistic Medicine.

Dr. Dean’s work has been published in the Journal of Nutritional and Environmental Medicine and American Academy of Osteopathy Journal.   Dr. Dean is a member and fellow of the American Academy of Environmental Medicine, the American Osteopathic Association, the American College for the Advancement of Medicine, the American Academy of Osteopathy, and the Osteopathic Cranial Academy.

A Commentary on the Critics of Environmental Medicine and the AAEM

In December 2012, the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) published a report entitled, “Health and RF EMF from Advanced Meters.”  The PUCT report offered criticism of the American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM), whereby it somewhat condescendingly stated:

“The certifying board for AAEM is the American Board of Environmental Medicine (ABEM), founded in 1988.  It is worth noting that neither AAEM nor ABEM is recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS).  Furthermore, the certification criteria required by ABEM are relatively sparse [emphasis added] compared to those of ABMS.  ABEM requires that an applicant have three years’ experience practicing environmental medicine, take the AAEM medical instructional courses, and pass a written and an oral exam.”

The above information totally misrepresents the certification criteria of the American Board of Environmental Medicine.  The complete criteria listed at the ABEM website are as follows:

The ABEM certificate in Environmental Medicine is awarded after all the following requirements have been met:

  1. Licensed by an accredited medical school in the United States, Canada or other countries.
  1. Additional medical training completed in:
  • An accredited residency program of choice such as Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Surgery, Emergency Medicine, etc., with certification by the American Board of Medical Specialties;
  • All required medical instructional courses specific to the practice of Environmental Medicine and Allergy presented by the American Academy of Environmental Medicine.
  1. Physician must have practiced Environmental Medicine for three years.
  1. Successfully completed ABEM’s certifying exam including Part I (written) and Part II (oral).  This exam certifies that the physician is competent in the practice of Environmental Medicine.

The PUCT report omits crucial information relevant to providing perspective for its straw man argument that the Environmental Medicine specialty is not recognized by the ABMS.  In fact, ABMS specialty certification is a prerequisite to a certification in environmental medicine.  Thus, one can argue that physicians certified in environmental medicine have the complete medical background in at least one of the 24 specialties recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties plus the added training, experience, and special insight needed to handle the prevention and effective treatment of illnesses caused by the interaction between humans and their environment.

In addition, the American Academy of Environmental Medicine is recognized by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) as an accredited provider for continuing medical education for physicians.

If Dr. Dean believes so strongly in this issue why isn’t she standing up for the people who come to her for help regarding smart meters? If she wants EHS to be recognized, why isn’t she diagnosing it, and standing up for it? [somewhat edited by SkyVision Solutions]

    • I sense frustration in your comments, but my impression is that Dr. Dean has done as much to help with the recognition of EHS as about anyone else out there. Progress is being made. I expect Dr. Dean is diagnosing EHS the best she can but there are no recognized diagnostic codes that formally allow its documentation as an illness. As a practicing physician, she still has to act within the system as she attempts to change it.

      • Veronica says:

How about Allergy or sensitivity NOS and then specify that it is to electromagnetic fields? If the system is to be changed and the powers that be refuse to change it then, as you stated, it must be changed with what is available. Diagnosis it with the available, existing codes and then specify what the NOS is.

      • Challenges for people with EHS are primarily two-fold at this point in terms of getting these stupid meters off their homes:

        (1) I know of one case, for example, where a medical doctor wrote a letter that the following condition, ICD 995.94, “Systemic inflammatory response syndrome due to noninfectious process with acute organ dysfunction,” was caused by environmental stimuli such RF emissions from a smart meter and that removal of meter was necessary in order to experience relief of symptoms. The utility and utility commission ignored the doctor’s letter saying they were not convinced and that EHS is not a recognized medical condition. If EHS or (MCS) had recognized codes, it would be at least become increasingly difficult for utilities and utility commissions to ignore medical doctor orders.

        (2) In another case where someone wrote about debilitating EHS symptoms after smart meter installed, the state utility commission wrote: “Regulation, licensing, and safety of radio frequency equipment rests with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The FCC is required by the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 to evaluate the effect of emissions from FCC-regulated transmitters on the quality of the human environment. The meters used comply with FCC safety standards. … There is no basis for the Commission to require …any further or different action. Pursuant to Admin. Code, the utility determines the type of metering equipment to be installed and its location.”

The above “excuses” for not serving in the public interests are extremely frustrating when we are talking about someone not being able to control the RF emissions on one’s own property. But until we see changes in the FCC or ICDs, or until we have more lawsuits, etc., our medical doctors don’t appear to have much power to change our current course. … I should just add that the quickest possible remedy would appear to be state or provincial legislation giving the consumer the choice to opt-out without a fee; there is at least one state, Vermont, where there has been success in this area.

    For Heavens sake,
Everybody on Planet Earth do as now so many of us do and have been doing for some years now, which is to padlock our Electric Meter Boxes to stop the wicked and ongoing theft of the Electric Safe and Passive Analog Meters on your home/s and or small business properties in every country on Earth. Don’t let these Stand-Over Thieving Idiotic C.E.O’s and their minions of the various Electrical Power Companies play Russian ROULETTE with you lives any longer.

I suffer from severe E.H.S and have done for over four (4) years here in Victoria Australia. This stealing of the Safe and Passive Analog Electric Meters, is a CRIME of the worst possible kind, the way these Rapinely Money Greedy Electric Power Companies now world-wide, are ripping into your cash-strapped pockets and RAPING, yes RAPING every body on Earth of their hard won cash and just as importantly raping your Right To FREE CHOICE !

Sensible people and well informed people in the hundreds of thousands and now millions of us Clearly SEE that the forced imposition of these electric so-called ‘smart-meters’ is just a scam and part of Agenda 21 which is the “New World Order to steal away your God Given Unalienable and Democratic Rights in America and Canada and Victoria Australia and all Countries that are still Democracies, such as England and the rest of the United Kingdom.

Mounting Medical Evidence from the W.H.O or World Health Organisations are finding more and more evidence as to the mounting numbers and types of Type 2B Carcinogens now seemingly being caused by these ACCURSED and seemingly now proving to be deadly to All LIFE from these Electric Microwave so-called Smart Meters, which are not smart in any way at all, but are also in mounting numbers of cases world-wide also proving to be INCENDIARY METERS !

It is only the vested interests of the Microwave Industry and their Sales People and Investors who want to keep this now seeming to be Carcinogen Causing Industry going for reasons of monetary profit or Filthy Lucre. The people so in love with making a quick buck from these so-called ‘smart-meters are morally decrepit individuals who need to be severely punished for showing no Care for their customers medical health or welfare.
