The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) today posted an article at energy.gov, entitled, “An Explainer: How ‘Grid Modernization’ Could Improve Your Life.” The article states:
“With funding from the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, DOE helped jumpstart this shift [to a modernized grid] by deploying over 16.6 million ‘smart meters’, which enable two-way communication. We hope to ultimately see these meters on every home and business in the country.” [1] [2]
Despite all the risks and threats related to smart meters, they want them “on every home and business in the country.” That statement is quite astonishing to me. I have never heard it put quite that way. Generally, the Federal government has left smart meter deployments up to individual states in the United States. But here, the expectation is quite clear, i.e., put them on EVERY home and business in the country.
The DOE blog article implies that smart meters “could improve your life.” I suppose we should emphasize the word could. I could win a million dollar lotto drawing tomorrow, but it is more likely that I won’t. We have chronicled in article after article how smart meters will more likely lower your quality of life (if not worse) and result in a loss of rights and freedoms.
The DOE tries to portray smart meters as “grid innovation,” but we have shown them to be examples of “fraudulent, bogus innovation.” [3]
Timothy Schoechle, Ph.D. has referred to smart meters as “a canard.” [4] Furthermore, Dr. Schoechle characterized the comments of a senior Department of Energy official, who stated that:
“We had a huge amount of money that had to be spent on smart grid, and we didn’t have anything off-the-shelf that we could call smart grid except these meters that were designed 20 years ago.”
So there is nothing “innovative” or “smart” about smart meters. Smart meter deployments are extremely costly, and consumers will never recoup those costs. They will only suffer the consequences of ill-conceived boondoggles dreamt up by corporations looking to make billions of dollars in profits and governments looking to exert “economic, social, cultural, and increasing political control” over their citizens. [5]
Please don’t fall prey to the propaganda being disseminated by the DOE this month as their blog article states: “This month the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is making a series of announcements to support its Grid Modernization Initiative.”
In fact, maybe contact the DOE and let them know what your think about the expectation that EVERY home and business in America will receive a “smart” meter. Refer to contact information at: http://www.energy.gov/contact-us.
