Maryland Resident Claims Adverse Health Effects Due To Smart Meter Installation

Garic Schoen, a Maryland resident, submitted testimony to the members of the Economic Matters Committee on March 14, 2013, the date of the HB 1038 “Smart Meter Opt Out without Penalty” hearing.  Mr. Schoen experienced adverse health effects following a Smart Meter installation, as documented by his doctor and physical therapist.  Upon removal, those adverse health effects were substantially diminished.

New Report – Smart Grid More Vulnerable to Remote Cyber Attacks

Introduction:

Smart Grid GapsA Congressional report was released May 21, 2013, entitled, “Electric Grid Vulnerability, Industry Responses Reveal Security Gaps.”

The report listed two (2) cyber security-related findings:

Finding 1:  The electric grid is the target of numerous and daily cyber-attacks.

Finding 2:  Most utilities only comply with mandatory cyber-security standards and have not implemented voluntary NERC* recommendations.

* NERC is an acronym for the North American Electric Reliability Corporation.

Wireless Refugees: “Cell Phones, Wi-Fi Making Us Sick”

Kristin Fisher reports on February 27, 2013, for WUSA, Channel 9, in Washington, D.C., about people who have Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity (EHS).

Ms. Fisher travels to Green Bank, West Virginia, where wireless technology is outlawed because of the Green Bank Telescope.  The area is protected from any interference by the only Radio Quiet Zone in the country.  There’s no cell phone towers and no microwaves.  It’s a radio dead zone.

She interviews 3 residents who moved there to get away from EMF for health reasons.

The one irritating part of the video is where a physics professor states, “I have no idea what causes their problems, but it’s not caused by electromagnetic fields.”  Overall, the investigative report provides a balanced view of the EHS controversy.

New Report on Possible Biological Effects from Smart Meters and Appliances

This posting is intended to highlight a new report published by Ronald M. Powell (Ph.D., Harvard University, 1975), entitled, “Biological Effects from RF Radiation at Low-Intensity Exposure, Based on the BioInitiative 2012 Report, and the Implications for Smart Meters and Smart Appliances,” latest version dated June 11, 2013.

Dr. Powell has developed a distinctive way to explain the implications of the BioInitiative 2012 Report as it applies to wireless smart meters and smart appliances.

Smart Meter Transmission Frequency Claims – “Misinformation” or “Missing Information”?

by K.T. Weaver, SkyVision Solutions, Updated October 25, 2018

Introduction

When installing wireless smart meters in the neighborhood, utilities typically attempt to downplay customer concerns with so-called “Fact Sheets” and marketing campaigns.  One of the issues normally deals with answering the following question:

“How often is my smart meter transmitting?”

Smart Grid Advocacy Group Disseminates Propaganda

Fact or Fiction ClipartIntroduction

A smart grid advocacy group, called the Smart Grid Consumer Collaborative (SGCC)*, has produced a video that claims to “separate the facts from the fiction about smart meters and provide consumers with reliable information about the technology that refutes the most commonly circulated myths.”

Nothing could be further from the truth.  The video under the pretence of being a “credible” source of information, exudes propaganda, makes nonfactual statements, and denigrates concerned citizens through hyperbole.

The video, called “Separating the Facts from the Fiction about Smart Meters,” begins by stating that “there has been some misinformation floating around the Internet about smart meters.”  It proposes to dispel three main falsehoods:

  1. Smart meters “infringe on your right to privacy.”
  2. Smart meters are “allegedly harmful to your health.”
  3. Smart meters are “the fourth horseman of the apocalypse that will wreak havoc on your life.”

The above items will be addressed in reverse order.

Cyber Threat To Get Much Bigger With Smart Grid

Cyber criminals are increasingly using the Internet, as well as traditional spying techniques, to infiltrate the computer networks of power companies and the larger electrical grid that distributes power between states.

According to an investigative report WKYC TV in Cleveland, Ohio, “[t]he threat is about to get much bigger as the nation’s 3,000 power utilities continue to build the so-called Smart Grid.”

Refer to the archived video below, which originally aired in October 2012:

Note:  WKYC-TV was the original source for the above video, and this website used a direct link when it was available.  When it was later noted that the video was no longer available through WKYC, SkyVision Solutions substituted an archived copy.

Excerpt from WKYC-TV Report:

CLEVELAND, OHIO

Where the current system only sends power to your home or business, the Smart Grid will use “smart meters” that allow customers can talk back to the utility over the Internet.

Currently, about a third of Ohio’s customers have these “smart meters.”

The Smart Grid is supposed to help customers reduce energy consumption because they can see their usage in real time and reduce usage accordingly.

It’s also supposed to prevent widespread outages by automatically rerouting around trouble spots.

But experts say the Smart Grid also gives cyber criminals new ways to infiltrate the system.

A few years ago, security company IOACTIVE performed a demonstration on how susceptible these smart meters can be.  It hacked into one smart meter in Seattle and gained control of entire neighborhoods. …

“We’re behind the ball with security,” said Trevor Niblock, director of energy services at IOActive. “They don’t fully have a grasp on even what the threats and risks are in cyber space.”

Just last month, hackers broke into a company that designs software for the Smart Grid, taking files that could give them insight into how to launch a bigger attack.
